New Job and Lambing Update

I have a new job.  Beyond lambing, sheep care, dog training etc.

Presently I am working at the farm next door to our sheep.  The owner has graciously allowed us to graze the pasture and hired me to work  on the property clearing, landscaping, general up keep and what ever else needs to be done.

Between lambing and my new job I am absolutely exhausted.  I have lost just over 25 lbs this month.

This is an example of what I am doing with the help from a chainsaw and a 'gator' or 'mule' and my trusty co-worker Brynn.

Here is a shot of a small section of the fence-line cleared today. Trees and storm damage has fallen over fence.

Six full loads chain sawed and taken to the wood pile for chipping, later...

After

Another view of the same fence-line, other direction - Before

After

Just a mere chip off the massive iceberg of work that remains to be completed.

Onto lambs...

The lambs have been growing.  We have leveled off with 29 lambs until the next batch starts.

16 ewes delivered
6 more remaining with due dates beginning next week (from second ram)

33 lambs total
1 still born (disrupted attachment - dog attack)
1 death at birth (premature ram lamb)
1 death from birth complication (ewe lamb died in birth canal during pull - TOO BIG)
1 death from being smashed in jug by ewe (ram lamb).

29 surviving lambs
10 ram lambs (12 total less two ram lamb deaths)
19 ewe lambs (20 total, less one ewe lamb death)

All banded, tagged, vaccinated and growing like weeds.  We do not seem to have any bad mothers.  The cluns & romneys have really impressed me - they are fantastic moms.  Maimie has been taking excellent care of her triplets, very good mom.  Border Leicester ewes are a little more casual in their mothering skills, but still doing a good job.  All in all I am very happy with where they are.

Daisy will deliver in the next set of ewes. I am taking bets on how many lambs she is carrying.  She still has two weeks to go...already she is wider than she is tall.

I am sad that Piglet will have to be culled because she is a lovely mom to her little black ewe lamb.

I actually picked up my camera this weekend and shot a bunch of pictures.  Only processed the ones I needed for Beth's 52 Week submission. Here are a couple from that set.

Beth shows patience for the first time in her life with the lambs.

The ewes seem to trust her to not hurt their lambs, yet still move off of her when required.

Fred is growing well and has become people averse.  He wants NOTHING to do with humans now.  Good lamb, fully bonded with his new mom and adopted siblings.

Fred with his family.  You can see why we call this ewe 'baldy' she rubbed her fleece off on the fence.  She is now named "Sadie".  She earned her name by adopting Fred and nursing 2 other lambs when they need it.  She is feeding 5 lambs, thus she gets double rations of alfalfa and her very own bucket of grain.  All of the lambs are gaining weight, healthy and stick to her like glue.

A couple cute ewe lambs munching on leaves.

Adorable little lamb raspberry, too cute for words.

Beth's Perspective

"This is my job.  I move these stupid sheep around.  Sometimes Camera Face blows whistles, occasionally shouts,  falls down a lot, and I have even seen her cry.

I don't like to make her sad which is why I try to be good.

Sheep are idiots and it pisses me off.

They get together in their little groups and talk about the dogs.  They don't have anything better to do.  The bitches.

This is what I think of you stupid sheep.  Take that!

I work for Mr. Camera Face too.  I like to work for him.  He doesn't cry as much as Camera Face.

Mr Camera Face is letting me teach him about working sheep and all this herding stuff.  At some point he will learn that it is pointless to move the sheep up and down a stupid fence line.

I try to tell him what is he is saying is not what I WANT do to.  He doesn't listen.

So I do what he asks, sorta.

Even though I think it is pointless.  We go up, inside stupid flank, then come back, inside stupid freaking flank again - then back up.  Blech, I hate it.

I try to look as miserable as I can.  Maybe he will get the message that this is dumb.

He doesn't listen very well.

A fun game I like to play is pretending to not know things I DO!  Like a simple little outrun to fetch back some sheep that decided to make a break for it.  The pressure of being good for 5 minutes was just too much.  I had to let off some steam.

I am gonna get even with the wooly bitches now.

This is what happens to smart mouth ewes who talk behind my back.

Boooya!  Take THAT!!

This time I heard Mr. Camera face say bad words.  Camera Face says the sheep are not supposed to go faster than a walk.
I call BS on that objective.  Just sayin' it's crap.

I don't understand what the problem is.  Dogs need to floss their teeth too.  It is good for dental hygiene.

I am sorry Mr. Camera Face.  I won't do it again (until tomorrow),  I promise."

Snow Sucks

I have had my fill of this white crap.

I certainly hope you do not expect me to work in this sh*it.
It is not in my contract.

You ask me to do a damn thing in this COLD there better be plenty of Bacon forthcoming.

Get the white crap off my ball!

This is some f'ed up sh*t.  (News Flash: Beth does not like the snow.)

Get off and STAY OFF my ball!

My ball, no white crap allowed.

Unless it is Bacon Flavored.

(Beth has a potty mouth, sorry, she picked it up from Camera Face.)

Day in the Life

I have a new addiction.  That damn iPhone has taken over my life.

The first few days I entertained myself arguing with Siri.  It is fun to call her names when I am having a bad day.

Texting with Siri is an adventure in hysterics.

I almost let her send this text, until I read it.

"Surrey that you scepter I am."

That was supposed to be "Sorry that ewe slipped her lamb."

My favorite thing on on my iPhone are oodles of photo editing apps I have been downloading.  I like to play with Photogene, Camera+, Instagram & PictureShow.  I am taking pictures of everything, because ... I can.

This last weekend someone broke in to our house in broad daylight and stole our Wii game system, a few other things and sadly my camera bag which held most of my lenses that was sitting near the piano in the front room.  Thankfully the idiots managed to miss my camera & the 100-400 mm lens which was sitting on the counter.   The only things that were stolen were in the front half our house, Bonnie & Ranger protected the rear, my camera, & our computers.

What does that have to do with my iPhone?  Well, the only lens I have right now is my mondo huge, heavy lens and I get sick of schlepping it around with me and the iPhone is so much easier.  It is fun too!

The camera is less than stellar.  It is very noisy (grainy) in low light conditions, but it can take some rather surprising shots, and the photo processing apps can give a rather ho-hum phone picture a kick.

And now, just for you.

A photographic journey through a day in the life of a Lunatic Sheepy Dog Lady & her Followers.

"Are you ever going to get out of bed?  I need to pee."

 "GET UP NOW!"

"Give me some of your breakfast crackers?  I have big hunger now."

"Are you going to leave me at home alone with Ranger again?  When will you take me back to see the sheep?  I like to bite them."

Come on Beth, time to leave Teddy and go get some work done.

"Just a moment please, I must kill the Teddy first."

Later in the pasture.

"Move it Sherman."  (I liked the motion blur on the sheep nose.)

"I am watching ewe."

"Nope, pigs can't do this."

"What do you mean Lie Down?  WTF is wrong with a sit?  I am stopped aren't I?

"Go ahead Fatso, make my day."

"I forgot to floss my teeth this morning, care to help me out?"

"What is that thing?  Can I eat it?" (tries to bite my pretty pink iPhone cover.)

Motion blur, right before I fell over, yet again.

Sheep think it is funny when you are on their level.

It's the ewe posse, don't f*ck with them.

"This is what we think about your stupid dog and running around the field."

"Move it wenches".

Look at the mountain, it is so pretty.

Brynn, what are you doing!  LIE DOWN!  Whoops, no emotion.

Whistle, realize there is alfalfa in my whistle, no sound comes out.
Screeching commences.

Look at how the pretty light has back lit the sheep.

 Lovely...

Ooooh pretty sun.  Wait, where are they going?

Where is Brynn?  There she is....

I love this place.

Sheep make me smile.

Okay ladies, let's go eat.

Beth, hold them over there while I fill up the feeders.

Hello Jim.  How are you today?  Really, dude, I don't need any help.

Hi Mama, you poor old girl.

We are going to miss your sweet face.

"It was a long day."

Yep. We hauled hay, built a creep feeder, cleaned stuff up, worked dogs, checked sheep for pregnancy & weights, moved a bunch of stuff, fed kids, did laundry, made meals, dishes....and the dogs are too tired to get off the couch.

Come on Camera (iPhone) Face.  Let's go to bed.

Shut the light off and get that thing out of my face.

Goodnight.

Goodnight Brynn.
